Hot and Cold Weather Safety Tips

By Susan C. Jensen

Overheating or "heat prostration" can kill your Sibe. Never leave them alone in a vehicle - even with the windows open, a parked car, truck, or van can quickly become a furnace. In 80 ° F. the inside of your car will be a blistering 110° F. Parking in the shade offers little protection, because the sun shifts position throughout the day. When traveling, carry a gallon thermos filled with cold water. Don't force your Sibe to exercise after a meal in hot weather. Always exercise in the early morning or in the evening when it is cooler. In extremely hot weather, don't leave your Sibe standing on pavement or asphalt and keep walks to a minimum. He is much closer to the hot asphalt or pavement - his body can heat up quickly and his paws can get burned. Don't take your Sibe to the beach unless you can provide a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water for him to drink. Rinse him off after he has been in salt water. Provide plenty of shade for your Sibe staying outside, preferably by using a properly constructed dog house with plenty of air flow. Bring your Sibe indoors during the hottest time of the day, and provide plenty of cool water. Be especially sensitive to you older or overweight Sibes in hot weather.

Avoid walking your Sibe in areas that you suspect have been treated with chemicals, insecticide, or salt. Call your veterinarian or local Animal Poison Control Center if you suspect your Sibe has been poisoned. Be alert for coolant leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste, and ingesting even a small amount can be fatal. Try animal-friendly products that use propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.

A clean coat can help prevent skin problems so keep your Sibe well brushed. Take him to your veterinarian for a Spring or early Summer check-up, including a heartworm test if he isn't on a year round preventative medication. Have your veterinarian recommend a safe flea and tick control program.

Never let your Sibe off leash outside unless in a fenced yard - he can contract a fatal disease from other animals or be injured, killed or stolen. Make sure to keep windows and doors closed or screened. Never let your Sibe off leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm - dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. They can also slip on ice and break teeth or bones. More dogs are lost during Winter than any other season, so make sure they always wear I.D. tags. Thoroughly wipe your Sibe's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, anti-freeze or other chemicals while licking his paws, and his pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.
