Guidelines for Breeders

By Lisa Amos

Some guidelines for Breeders to help avoid problems in the future:

Hip Dysplasia shows up and not just out of dogs not checked by a vet. Just because dog "A" can run in harness doesn't necessarily mean that all of his/her littermates can. If it is a cost problem, that is another issue - then maybe you shouldn't be doing the breeding. If we have the ability to do checks on our Siberians, in able to do the very best that we can for the puppies that WE CHOOSE to bring into this world, then we should be doing it! All of it. Hips and Eyes is what we have available.

There are no longer any more EXCUSES for not doing these tests! As for EYE exams, they must be ACVO certified Veterinarians. American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists otherwise they are not specialized in this field.

Much to my surprise, recently surfing I have seen that almost every SIBERIAN website lists that their dogs have been tested for the above, yet they don't appear in the DATABASES listed below. Second being that they use a vet who is not ACVO. So to people looking to purchase Siberians who have been tested, do your homework, use these databases, request copies of exams, etc. That is the only way that you are going to be certain that you are getting the proper information. Use the information that is available to you, use it wisely, and make the best choices that you can for the future Siberians that you intend to produce!
